The Cost of Waiting Another Season
A garage isn't just where you park. For most Jersey Shore homes, it's also the back door to the kitchen, the laundry room, or the stairs up to the bedrooms. A garage door that's easy to defeat doesn't just cost you tools and bikes — it can hand someone a direct, unlocked route into the rest of the house. Put that off through another winter of empty houses, long weekends away, and older original doors, and you're not saving time. You're leaving the weakest point of the house unaddressed for months.
Most break-ins through a garage door aren't dramatic. There's no battering ram. It's a handful of well-known tricks that take under a minute if the right gap or weakness is there.
How It Actually Happens
The Coat-Hanger Trick
Older garage doors, especially the kind still common in original Jersey Shore housing stock, often have a small gap above the door. A burglar straightens a wire hanger, slides it through that gap, and hooks the emergency release cord — the same cord you'd pull in a power outage. One tug and the door disconnects from the opener, letting it be pushed open by hand. It's quiet, it's fast, and it leaves almost no sign of forced entry.
Code Grabbing on Old Openers
If your opener is original to the house and still uses a fixed code (no rolling, constantly-changing code), a cheap code-grabbing device can capture the signal from your remote and replay it later. This is more of a risk with openers from decades past than modern units, but a lot of older Ocean City homes still have the original equipment.
Forcing the Door by Hand
Without a working lock engaged, a standard sectional door can sometimes be pried up a few inches and forced the rest of the way, especially if the tracks are already a little bent or the door is slightly warped. Salt air, freeze-thaw cycles, and nor'easter winds all take a toll on older doors over the years, and a door that's even a little out of alignment is easier to pry than one sitting flush in its tracks.
The Opener Left in the Car
A visible garage remote clipped to a visor or sitting on a dashboard is an invitation, particularly for a car parked in a driveway over a long weekend at the shore. Someone doesn't need to break into your house at all — just your car.
The Unlocked Interior Door
Even when a garage is entered through a side door or window, the real damage happens if the door connecting the garage to the living space isn't locked. Many homeowners treat that door like a closet door instead of an exterior entry point.
What Actually Stops Each of These
- Close the emergency release gap. A simple shield plate over the release mechanism, or routing the cord so it can't be hooked from outside, blocks the coat-hanger trick without affecting how the release works in a real power outage.
- Upgrade a fixed-code opener to rolling code. If your opener predates rolling-code technology, replacing it removes the code-grabbing risk entirely and usually comes with better auto-reverse safety too.
- Keep the door aligned and sealed. A door that sits flush in its tracks with tight weatherstripping is harder to pry and also handles freeze-thaw cycles better. A seasonal tune-up catches small gaps in tracks or hardware before they become usable ones.
- Use a keypad instead of leaving a remote in the car. A keypad with a code you control means no remote to steal, and you can change the code any time.
- Lock the interior door like you mean it. A simple deadbolt on the door between garage and house adds a second barrier even if the garage itself is compromised.
- Engage the manual slide lock for extended absences. Most sectional doors have a manual lock bar that physically locks the door to the track — worth using any time the house will sit empty for more than a few days, which is common for shore homes in the off-season.
- Add motion lighting at the driveway. Cheap, effective, and it removes the cover of darkness that most of these tricks rely on.
When to Call Ocean City Garage & Gate
If your opener still uses an older fixed-code system, or you're not sure whether your emergency release is exposed, that's worth a look before winter settles in. Our Garage Door Opener Service covers upgrading to rolling-code and smart openers that close the code-grabbing gap and add features like scheduled locking for when the house sits empty. If the door itself is sticking, sagging, or not sitting flush in the track — common after a few seasons of salt air and freeze-thaw cycles — our Maintenance & Tune-Ups service realigns tracks and hardware so there's no gap to exploit in the first place. For properties with a side gate as an additional entry point, our Gate Repair & Installation work can tighten that up too.
If any of this sounds like your garage, don't wait for a test you don't want to fail. Call Ocean City Garage & Gate and we'll walk your property, check your door and opener, and fix what's actually putting your home at risk — serving Ocean City, NJ and the surrounding shore communities.
